[ oh...! hello, natalie. yin yu's here, sitting with his bandaged hand in his lap, mask pushed off to the side so you can see his face. he looks up, then gives a small nod in greeting, motioning if she'd like to sit. ]
ah. well... it doesn't seem he's at all unwilling to share, but it's best to be truthful. ] ...I can't give you the complete story; we were separated at one point, so you will have to get the rest from Lady Lili. Is that alright, Lady Natalie?
[After checking on a few people after the execution, she's wandering around without much purpose, stopping eventually at the lake. When she sees Yin Yu, after a few moments, during which it seems like she isn't certain whether she'll strike up conversation:]
[ it's quieter out here. with beau safely being treated and things finally having come to a halt for a few more days, yin yu has found his way over to the lake for a moment of reflection. in his best moments, he tends to try and melt out of sight, and this wasn't any exception.
he's not expecting company, but he picks up on natalie's presence before she says anything (though he doesn't know who, and doesn't turn to look.) when she speaks up, though, he turns to look back, properly, and then out at the lake itself. ]
...In some ways. It's just as quiet, after. [ after...everything. it's soothing. counting the water that laps the surface of the lake back and forth is something so menial that perhaps it can calm a troubled head. ] It is not often I see places like either in my home, so it is, in some ways, a little novel.
...have you come out for a walk, L-- [ ... ] - Natalie? I can leave if you'd prefer.
[There's a measure of surprise as she says that, thrown by how easily he offers to leave on the chance that it might be more convenient for her. She shakes her head as she declines, but then she falters for what to say next.]
[ a small nod of his head as if to say, very well. he's used to being an unobtrusive person.
as for the question...yin yu pauses as if thinking about his answer for a moment. to answer her fully. ] ...I do, but it's not so much that. The domain that I work in is almost exclusively the land; there is a different being than my lord who is in charge of the water, more or less. It is an unspoken agreement between my lord and him, and not one that I wish to step on the toes of by any means.
[ if natalie's quick, she might pick up on the less politely worded meaning of that sentence, which is along the lines of i don't have a death wish: hard pass.
he's been to black water island exactly once, and it was with hua cheng, and he'd rather not repeat the experience more than necessary. especially recently. he will leave the provoking to hua cheng who at least bothers the other calamity himself and doesn't make his errand boy do it... ] So, it has been a very long time since I've seen much water at all, besides on the island.
[It was hard not to miss the uncharacteristic response to the voting results and his manner at the execution. She's as hard pressed to admit concern as usual, but when she sees him in the gardens later in the day...]
[ now that things have settled down, yin yu's in the garden, kneeling down in front of a patch of small purple flowers. a few of them have been removed--a closer look will reveal that he's clipping a few stems of flowers, and plucking weeds, as well.
when he's addressed, he glances upwards. yin yu's wearing his mask today, expression completely cut off--at recognizing natalie, he gives a small bow of his head in greeting. ] ...indeed.
[ there's a pause, and it seems like yin yu wants to stop, but... ] ...Do you know anything about weeding? [ he's not turning away the company. ]
They aren't as bad here as they were in the farmlands. It won't be difficult.
[ he's honestly not that much more knowledgeable--its really only the chores of the sect that ever got down to this, and ghost city doesn't exactly have weeds, but the monotony of the act is rather soothing. he moves to the side a little, and points out a few straggler green plants. ] These, here, are invasive.
All you have to do is loosen the soil around it, and -- [ grabbing onto the plant, yin yu pulls upwards. it comes out in one piece, roots included. ] --get it out all the way from the root.
[ it seems like no matter how hard yin yu tries, he can't avoid these memories being shared. he's tried avoiding eye contact, he's tried avoiding people, but this camp is small and that means crossing paths with literally anyone is a chance to lose the worst game of memory roulette ever. today, it's natalie, but at least the memory isn't...
well, it's not from his life before the games, so at least there's that. instead, natalie gets to see an investigation. of most note is yin yu's reaction to the ashes: he's clearly afflicted in the memory, and when it fades and reality comes back, he exhales. it seems it caught him off guard, too, and it takes him a full few seconds (the sight of lady tanzawa's face is a lot, too) to return to reality.
he quietly puts his fist to his hand, and offers natalie a stiff little bow, his greetings proper even if he hates every second of this memory thing, thank you ]
She doesn't notice him before the memory hits - but once it's over and she's separated herself from those feelings that weren't really hers, she looks over in time to see him bow. With a shake of her head—]
You don't have to do that. [...] And we don't have to talk about it.
[It's clear from her expression that she's curious, but... This is invasive in the first place. Prying would make that even worse.]
well, at least he witnessed it, too. it's mostly just the invasion of privacy that's uncomfortable, in this case--he's a little relieved. of all of his memories, that isn't so bad.
so.... yin yu shakes his head, after a moment. ] ...It was on the island. [ he clarifies, eventually. ] The first week of our 'trials'.
[ in times of great trouble, yin yu always finds it is easier to work. so, he is one of the first to go out and look for any sort of half visible clue. it's better than nothing... even if little is found.
he comes by the deer cabin later in the evening, when things have settled just a bit. i'm going to assume the door is propped open or someone let him in but either way, he appears in the doorway, his fist knocking gently against the side of the door.
...he's got a slushie in his hands, mask to the side of his face. ] ....Natalie. [ with a small nod of his head. if she's awake... ]
[She's had enough visitors by now that the door is propped open so it doesn't automatically lock. It means the inside of the cabin is frantically growing frigid, but that's hardly the first thing on her mind right now. She's laying on her bed and staring towards the wall, though she spares a glance over her shoulder to see who's coming in.
To the greeting, though, she doesn't say anything for a long moment.]
What?
[It's clear from the sound of her voice that she's been crying.]
[ oh. his heart squeezes--yin yu has grown quite fond of natalie over the past few weeks, and it's hard, to see her hurting so badly. he lost someone last week: it's the worst kind of empathy to have, and natalie had to experience it twice in a day.
he closes the door behind him with a click, stopping some of the cold. ] Is there anything I can get for you?
[ besides the immediate capture of the people who hurt jason and percy. they're going to do their damndest...which has to be better than last week. ]
[ ah -- a familiar voice. natalie will find yin yu sitting on a bench in the garden, his brightly colored wings half unfolded behind him; when he recognizes her coming, he offers her a small, pleased smile. ]
...You have no idea. [ yin yu ducks his head, scooting over on the bench. ] Would you like to come enjoy it for a while, too?
